I’m With Nap

As a small business owner, one thing I’m beginning to understand is that, from here on out, your entire life will consist of having exactly one million things to do. Trust me, only one of those things you will actually want to do….take a nap. This one feeling grows inside of me daily, as if I’m in my third trimester, fighting whatever random craving the lord has bestowed upon me. “Hello! I’m Adrian, it’s nice to meet you. I’m with nap.”

I have had to put out more fires as a business owner than I ever did as a firefighter, and let me tell you…it’s exhausting. My business is run solely from the internet so that means, 24 hours a day I’m glued to my lap top or phone — writing, creating content, dealing with clients, making logos, developing marketing strategies, and generating content calendars. It’s a never-ending journey that takes the thrill out of the weekends and makes you uncertain of every step you will take from now until the day you retire.

So by now you’re probably starting to think, “man, owning a business sounds kind of shitty.” Well it can be… Honestly, it’s hard as fuck, and even that is an understatement. But the reason people start businesses is because they are all in search of that “American Dream,” right? The dream that says that we have the freedom to build something of our own that will some day make us rich. The dream that will leave us living comfortably, on an island somewhere, with exotic food and great drinks that never end. So at the end, if you are successful…that would make all the struggles and long days worth it.

We have established that it’s hard to own a business, and even harder to become rich. But, you know what else is hard? Being poor and living paycheck to paycheck. Now, that is a fact that most of us can attest to. Ironically, being broke is not only hard, it’s also expensive. Think about a time when you weren’t able to pay a bill…I bet they tacked on a late fee. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that, that is not a problem that the wealthy deal with. But at the end of the day, we all go home…equally as tired, and ready for a damn nap.

The point is that it’s hard to be broke AND it’s hard to be rich. It’s hard to live paycheck to paycheck, and it’s also hard to own your own business. So after putting both sides of the table into perspective, it’s important to understand that no matter what side you choose, you’re going to have to work your ass off. Both sides come with their own pro’s and con’s, but if I’m going to want a nap either way…then I’m damn sure going to make sure it’s because I’m working hard for my dreams!
